I’m introverted (NOT the same thing as shy, despite popular belief), so I like to get to know people before becoming completely open with them. When I do get to know you, though, I’m very warm and love to talk. Plus, I love stories and I’ll sit and listen to you if you ever need to vent. 4. If there is a spider in our room, you will probably have to be the one to kill it, because I’m going to be on the opposite side of the room cringing and telling you for the thousandth time how much I hate spiders. 5. I love books. 5?. If you think that Shakespeare, J.K. Rowling, Tolkien, and Mark Twain are literary geniuses, then we should definitely talk about books with each other. If you think that the best books ever written are those that have anything to do with teenage vampires, then maybe we should talk about something else. 5?. If you ask me to go to a party with you, be specific, because I actually have a shirt that says â€Å"I like to party, and by party, I mean read books† (I’ll show it to you sometime if you want to see it) and I will probably think that you’re referencing time in the library. Again, I apologize in advance. 6. While bubble gum ice cream—which does actually exist, in case you’ve never had the displeasure of trying it—really isn’t my thing, I am a die-hard chocolate fan, so if you ever need to bribe me to do something, chocolate-flavored anything (including ice cream) is your best bet for leverage. Dark chocolate is my favorite, by the way, but milk chocolate will do in a pinch. 7. I will constantly beleaguer you with the question â€Å"Is it cold in here to you?† because, believe it or not, my body’s heat-generating capabilities are almost as faulty as my neurons in the morning, so I am almost always cold. Also, if you ever walk into our room and it seems to be vacant except for a tubby little bundle of blankets with sock feet sticking out, check the bundle, because it’s probably me. 8. I’m really looking forward to being able to sit around with a bunch of smart people and talk about the amazing things they’re doing, so I’ll probably be attending a ton of community meals/study sessions/club gatherings, and I’ll likely be inviting you to them all the time. I also hope that all of us suitemates get to spend many evenings together sharing the discoveries we’ve been making, so don’t be a stranger. Besides, that’s the perfect way to end the day, don’t you think? 9. We’re probably going to be sharing a bathroom, so heads up: I take really long, scalding showers. So get in there before I do, and test the temperature before you just go hopping in—my little brother’s had to learn that the hard way over the years, bless his heart. My sources (a.k.a. my mom, dad, and brother) tell me that I have really weird tastes in food, so if we go to the cafeteria together, please be patient with me. For example, I will go straight to a sushi bar and pile my plate with raw seafood, squid tentacles, and fish-egg-laden rolls, but I will not touch any kind of fruit jelly with a ten-foot pole. Same for raw tomatoes (by themselves, anyway), American cheese, runny eggs, gravy, smoked sausage, and applesauce. Apparently my taste buds haven’t figured out how the American palate works. Good thing there’s going to be a ton of different cultural dishes available, because otherwise I would be in danger of missing out on the Freshman 15, and that would really be un-American. Alright, so that’s my list; I hope it was informative and not too terrifying. And can I tell you something truthfully? Though I do hope that we end up having a lot in common, I would also be pretty excited if you differ from me on almost every point I listed. I don’t want to room with my clone. I want to be part of a community that’s full of living, breathing, feeling human people with different perspectives and amazing insights that come from just being unique. These policies have driven down wages and forced the government to cut back funding for education, healthcare, and agricultural programs which benefit the poor (Harper 2003). † Again due to globalization there was civil unrest and mayhem in Jamaica. In 2009 there was an extradition request from the USA for Christopher â€Å"Dudus† Coke, a drug kingpin who enjoyed demigod status in the west Kingston stronghold of Tivoli Gardens. The United States wanted him for drug trafficking and gun trade. The then ruling party, the Jamaica Labour Party did not want to give up Mr. Coke, as he had close ties with the party. This included a construction company called Incomparable Enterprises, where Dudus was a partner, was awarded three government contracts by the JLP valued at $US 400 thousand, also a contract worth US $150,000 to transport materials to Riverton City landfill. Also the JLP was also responsible for campaigning and establishment of the â€Å"garrison† known as Tivoli. The USA said that they would cut all ties with Jamaica if Mr. Coke was not extradited. Jamaica depended on the US for money and imported products. Jamaica could not afford to lose America’s support, as so in turn, Dudus was extradited. These numbers are rising every year, with social media becoming more popular as the years go by. In Jamaica there are 7 local television channels; the two main local channels being CVM and TVJ (Gordon 89). These channels no longer focus on what is going on locally in the country or show many locally produced shows. The time slots for these stations are filled with American based television shows, cartoon and movies. The local news also doesn’t focus on what is happening in the country each day, but only gives us a brief overview and then skips to â€Å"international news† updating the public on what is happening in places such as USA, Canada, Asia and South America just to name a few. It is speculated that in Jamaica, the people know more about what is going on in America than they do about what is happening in their â€Å"own backyard. † In Jamaica during election time, the political parties use the media as a way to voice their opinions of the other parties and also articles and pictures are published in order to persuade voters to vote for a particular party or to persuade the public to vote in general. The media also helps with political socialization, this is the process by which people form their ideas about   politics and acquire political values, the two main political arties in Jamaica being the Jamaica Labour Party and the People’s National Party. Cancer is an uncontrolled proliferation of cells dividing. Mitosis ensures that every cell in an organism carries the same chromosomes. Mitosis is how our bodies grow and reproduce damaged cells. In the first stage (G1) it is primarily for cell growth. The second stage (S) is the synthesis phase where the genetic material duplicates. Then the last stage would be mitosis, in which the cell would go through prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase until cytokinesis where the cytoplasm divides and you have two daughter cells. Cancer In some cases the rate is fast; in others, slow; but in all cancers the cells never stop dividing. Cancer cells are clones. No matter how many trillions of cells are present in the cancer, they are all descended from a single ancestral cell. A single cell in a tissue suffers a mutation in a gene involved in the cell cycle. This results in giving that cell a slight growth advantage over other dividing cells in the tissue. As that cell develops into a clone, some if its descendants suffer another mutation in another cell-cycle generation. This further messes with the cell cycle of that cell and its descendants. As the rate of mitosis in that clone increases, the chances of further DNA damage increases. Eventually, so many mutations have occurred that the growth of that clone becomes completely unregulated. Amplitude Modulation (AM) Process Overview Modulation is the process of modifying the characteristic of one signal in accordance with some characteristic of another signal. In most cases, the information signal, be it voice, video, binary data, or some other information, is normally used to modify a higher-frequency signal known as the carrier. The information signal is usually called the modulating signal, and the higher-frequency signal which is being modulated is called the carrier or modulated wave. The carrier is usually a sine wave, while the information signal can be of any shape, permitting both analog and digital signals to be transmitted. In most cases, the carrier frequency is considerably higher than the highest information frequency to be transmitted. 4.2 Amplitude Modulation (AM) Amplitude modulation is the process of changing the amplitude of a relatively high frequency carrier signal in proportion with the instantaneous value of the modulating signal (information). The carrier frequency remains constant durin g the modulation process but that its amplitude varies in accordance with the modulating signal. An increase in the modulating signal amplitude causes the amplitude of the carrier to increase. Both the positive and negative peaks of the carrier wave vary with the modulating signal. An increase or decrease in the amplitude of the modulating signal causes a corresponding increase or decrease in both the positive and negative peaks of the carrier amplitude. If you interconnect the positive and negative peaks of the carrier waveform with an imaginary line, then you re-create the exact shape of the modulating information signal. This imaginary line on the carrier waveform is known as the envelope, and it is the same as the modulating signal. Amplitude modulation that results in two sidebands and a carrier is often called double sideband amplitude modulation (DSB-AM). In its basic form, amplitude modulation produces a signal with power concentrated at the carrier frequency and in two adja cent sidebands. Each sideband is equal in bandwidth to that of the modulating signal and is a mirror image of the other. Amplitude modulation is inefficient in terms of power usage and much of it is wasted. During my undergraduate years I could learn the fundamentals in Transducers and Instrumentation Components, Electrical and Electronic measurements, Electronic Equipment design, Analytical Instrumentation, Process Control Instrumentation, Power plant Instrumentation , Digital and optimal Control Systems. I observed on various occasions , especially in transducers and instrumentation components which is a vast subject, that there existed a wide enough rift between learning and practical implementation. While the undergraduate courses enable a student to grasp the fundamentals involved in a particular discipline of engineering, they do not present the opportunity to learn the ropes with new technologies that are current within the industry. Specialization becomes a necessity to understand new technologies and to improve upon the existing ones. It is to achieve this sophistication that I set out to pursue my post-graduate (M. S. ) studies in Bio-Medical Instrumentation. During my third year holidays I have done a project on  Computerized  respiration analysis  through embedded systems, a part of Bio-Medical instrumentation, one of the electives in the final year. This short stint has given me invaluable practical experience. It has given me the confidence to pursue a master’s degree and also kindled a desire to do research. The undergraduate course in Instrumentation and Control Engineering and with the advice of widely respected teachers at the college has given me the motivation to pursue a career in Bio-medical Instrumentation . The sharing of ideas and new findings has always been a part of my undergraduate life. Presentations and seminars were a perfect opportunity for me to explore beyond the syllabus and were instrumental in giving me a competitive edge over my peers. I relish a chance to indulge my creative side and gaining a deeper understanding of my work in process of presentations. I enjoy diving into a flood of data, picking out relevant information and delivering it all to an appreciative audience! In second year of my under-graduation I got a chance to present a paper at national-level on the topic  Robotics. The dynamic nature of scientific research was revealed to me as I worked on my presentation. Often new theories were replaced by old ones so fast that I was updating my work right up till the morning I had to present. By this experience I could learn that before beginning the first robotics project, prospective robotic hobbyist and robotic sports enthusiasts must have a basic understanding of the field of robotics and the issues surrounding robotic systems, including mechanical design, sensory systems, electronic control and software. A basic understanding of micro-controller systems including serial and memory-mapped interfacing, as well as some available open source software options should also be high on the list. Quest for knowledge needs considerable persistence and an unquenchable desire to learn. Whatever I have achieved till now can be attributed to my diligence and perseverance, which I have learned from my close knit family and culture.
